Navigating New Years Expectations: Why You Need to Give Yourself a Break in 2024

The start of the new year is a time when we feel immense pressure to be the best version of ourselves and strive to introduce copious amounts of new habits that will ‘fix’ us. I am here to tell you that this is not realistic!

Yes, it is always good to assess and evaluate what is serving a positive purpose in your life and what is not. However, it is impossible to implement all of these changes at the one time. As human beings we cope much better with change when it is introduced incrementally and over time. It makes it much less threatening and more manageable.

Quick side note- I have been reading about how many cultures around the world don’t consider the 1st of January as the new year, It actually makes a lot of sense. It is such a dark, cold, dreary time of the year- how can this be the best time for motivation and change? Historically and through late ancestors that lived thousands of years ago it was a time for hibernation and recharging.

Instead, the Spring equinox (normally around the middle of March and on 20th March 2024) is considered the change of the season and the start of the new year ahead. It is considered a time for rebirth and renewal. Nature displays that exact behaviour through the leaves beginning to grow on the trees, flowers beginning to bud, lambs lambing and brightness creeping in earlier and staying later in the evening.

My point with this is, don’t put so much pressure on yourself to have it all figured out on the turn of the new year. There are many opportunities for change throughout the year. You can take every single day as an opportunity to change, every hour…. You get my point.

Let this year be the year where you realise that it is time to give yourself a break! You are doing your best!

Do you ever sit back and think it is time to let go of the guilt and the shame?

To give yourself the grace to realise that you are only human and there is only so much you can do?

To remind yourself that you bring so much light and love to the table that you don’t give yourself credit for?

Is it time to stop beating yourself up for not being good enough, smart enough or perfect enough?

To reassure yourself that negative self-talk serves no purpose in your life?

Let this year be the year that you commit to realistic habit change that can have a massive impact on your life. Where all the ‘small’ changes add up to actual life changes! I have put small in inverted commas because, are they really ‘small’ changes when they stack up they transform your life, health and wellbeing?
